REPOST: AGC 93 December 26 2008 (Playing Catch-Up) (51:21)

With Mark Kinney. News about the New Year Show. Interview with Mark Hooper of Frontier Games about Old Frontiers. RPG Buffet's October selection, Hellsing. An interview with Chad Ellis from Your Move Games and James Bell of Fiery Dragon Games. RPG Buffet's November selection, Dark Ages Vampire. An interview with Chris Engle of Hamster Press.

I didn't find the Chili recipe Mags mentions in that RPG Buffet, but I imagine it will wind up either in a comment here, or over in the forums.

RPG Buffet Spaghetti Sauce:
Sautee' thinly sliced yellow onions (and garlic cloves if you want) until they turn caramel colored (which brings out their sugars), then add tomato paste; cook

Add meat (I prefer a mix of pork and beef ground meat)

Add chopped zucchini, carotts, fresh tomatoes (preferably peeled, but not necessary), red and green pepper, eggplant, and sliced mushrooms.

Add in maybe 1/2 cup of red wine and fresh herbs: thyme, basic, rosemary and bay leaves. Let everything simmer for a while.

Throw in a little more tomato paste until you get the consistency you like. Let simmer for a little while.

Remove leaves, add salt and pepper.

Download Issues

It appears we're having some issues on file downloads. At least in Firefox and the RSS feeds, the episodes are hitting a redirect loop; I've contacted LibSyn about this, and hope to have some resolution soon.

If you can't wait for your episodes, though, I have found that if you deign to open Internet Explorer, you can right click-save as and grab the files. I haven't tried Safari or other browsers, so I don't know how they're reacting.

If it's not cleared up by the time I get home from work tomorrow, I'll be sure to make the most recent episode available through Ourmedia.

Thanks, and sorry for the problem!

GenCon Auction/Christian Childrens Fund Update

Mags posted this to the forum, but I thought it worthy of posting on the front page. You can find the original posting this text comes from at the GenCon forums.

I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight on the Gen Con Indy 2008 Charity issue, as there has been a lot of misinformation spreading like wildfire on various forums, blogs, etc.

First allow me to explain how Gen Con goes about selecting its show charity. The process is very simple. We generally choose several potential charities based on the following criteria…

1) Is local to the (Indy) area
2) Supports children
3) Preferably has a focus in math, science or gaming-related activities.

Staff then votes individually on which charity we would like to support at the show; majority wins.

In 2008, Gen Con decided on a different route in choosing the charity, due the death of Gary Gygax, Gen Con’s founder. It was without question that the charity for 2008 would be one of Gary’s favorite charities.

In choosing the charity for 2008, Gen Con had heard through several channels, including a close friend of Gary’s family, that Christian Children’s Fund (CCF) was one of Gary’s favored charities. Gen Con contacted CCF about our intentions and asked for a logo and some promotional materials that we could use on our website. We were informed by a person at CCF that they would not be able to provide us with these materials, apparently due to our association with D&D. We were not comfortable with this position, considering Gary’s role as co-founder of D&D, and founder of Gen Con, and therefore we decided to pick a different charity. We informed the Gygax family of our decision and the reason behind it, and asked if there was another charity they would like us to consider. Fisher House was suggested, as it too was a favored charity of Gary’s. Considering the outstanding services this charity provides to service members, veterans, and their families, we knew Fisher House would be a great charity for Gen Con to support. We later found out that we had been misinformed as to CCF’s position in regards to D&D and Gen Con, but by then we had already chosen Fisher House as our charity, and announcements and promotions were already made and in the works, such that it would not have been possible to change charities at that point.

To be clear, Gen Con made the decision not to donate to CCF; at no time did CCF refuse to take charity money from Gen Con. Gen Con chooses a show charity long before Gen Con Indy 2008 ever takes place.

I have sent an email to The Partnership that runs http://www.livegameauctions.com and asked them to make sure the information being presented and discussed on their website is updated and accurate regarding this issue. I would also like to ask each of you to do your part in setting the record straight by contacting the various websites, blogs, etc. that you are active on, and where this issue is being discussed, to make sure they have their facts correct as well. The statement on Wikinews purporting to be from a Gen Con staff member is completely incorrect, as Gen Con staff has never commented on this subject …until now.

If there are any further questions or points of clarification, please feel free to contact me personally at jeannette@gencon.com.

Thank you.

AGC 85 August 30 2008 (GenCon and More) (1:14:12)

With Mark Kinney, Carol, Ben Balestra, and the RPG Buffet. Polymancer is launching Paladin, a fantasy gaming magazine. Mark gushes about GenCon and some of his finds there. Carol sends in an interview with Andrew Peregrine from Cubicle 7 about Victoriana (apologies for the sound quality on that one), and Mark brings an interview with Mark Purvis and Andy Smith, brand managers of Magic: The Gathering about the upcoming Shards of Alara and a few other upcoming things. Ben sends his views on GenCon, and we continue catching up with the RPG Buffet and their look at the Marvel Universe RPG. Mark looks inside the box of the upcoming Formula D! The show's direction with the forthcoming GenCon material.

From Mags:
One important addendum that our GM, John, forgot to mention when we recorded the segment:

A big feature of the Marvel Universe system that's stressed in the rules is that it can be played without a GM. A pair of players or even two teams can simply create characters and have a combat without the need for a GM to direct activities. So if players are simply looking for a combat session and not a full storyline with plot and character development, MURG gives them that option.

JULY 2008 RECIPE

The RPG Buffet had it's annual cookout this month, and Kae--who is not only learning to GM, but learning to cook--came up with a tasty fruit salad recipe for our dessert:

KAE'S FRUIT SALAD

Ingredients

* 3 oranges
* 2 key limes
* 1 pint of strawberries
* 2 bananas

Peel and chop the oranges and limes, and wash and cap the strawberries. Toss together in a bowl and chill for at least an hour. Just before serving, peel and slice the bananas and toss with the rest of the fruit.

Optional Glaze: Mix 1/4 cup of water or orange juice with 1 tablespoon of honey. After adding the bananas, pour over fruit and toss gently.

So, in a bit of a rush to get the episode posted (mostly because of the time-sensitive nature of the ENnies voting) I managed to not change most of the promo links in the show notes. I'll repeat them here, with the correct links.

Heart of the Hunter
The Adventures of Indiana Jim
The Game Master Show
Playing For Keeps (The one I got right, but you should check it out anyway and buy Mur's book and stuff...)

Thanks to Sam Chupp for catching that!

AGC 83 August 1 2008 (Interview with Bradley McDevitt) (1:02:04)

With Mark Kinney, Ben Balestra, and the RPG Buffet. Scheduling plays havoc again. Podcasts up for awards this year. The end of Gleemax. The creator of Harn passes away, and some musing on game settings. The GenCon podcasting track for this year. Big shocking review will be next episode instead of this one (at least, we hope). The RPG Buffet talks about Toon. Games You May Never Have Heard Of: Chronicles of Ramlar! Interview with Bradley K. McDevitt, creator of Nightlife, It Came From The Late Late Late Show, and Haiiii-Ya!

From Mags:
No recipe for June, since this was the Buffet's annual trip to Huber's Orchard & Winery. However, we invite the audience to check out Forbe's recommendations for twenty-five great wines under $25.00.

New Forums Forthcoming...

It would appear that the old PodcastPEN forums have finally gone away.

It will be a little bit of time, but I plan to set up a solution along the lines of what I set up for the Rolemonkeys a while back. I've got to relearn a few things, but we should have some additional flexibility as well.

We'll be sure to announce both here and on the show when I've got things set up.

Thanks!

AGC 82 July 19 2008 (Return of the RPG Buffet) (53:16)

With Mark Kinney and the RPG Buffet. Mark was on vacation, so the show was late, but he talks a little about a game he played called Liar's Dice. Then the RPG Buffet makes its triumphant return, discussing favorite games played through last year, then their experiment in a short Decipher Star Trek campaign. A little bit of feedback.

From Mags:
There's no recipe for the first segment of this episode, as Louis and I went to Louisville's North End Cafe for supper. However, we can certainly recommend online resources to check local restaurant reviews!

Zagat.com and DineSite.com both focus on high-end, world-class restaurants, so if you're looking for an upscale, classy dining experience, start here.

we8there.com focuses on the service aspect of restaurants. They operate on the belief that if the service sucks, it doesn't matter how good the food tastes. Reviews are submitted by the site's readers. Restaurants.com is a wonderfully comprehensive review site, with diners from all over the world share their dining experiences. And of course, don't forget to check your local newspaper or locally-based websites for reviews--our favorite for the Louisville area is LouisvilleHotbytes.com.

When planning your evening out, be sure to Google the names of the restaurants you're considering, because most wil have web sites with their menus posted (usually with pricing). Call to see if you need reservations, or at the very least call to see what the wait for a table is--you can save yourself a lot of headache that way!

An update to the information about the Decipher version of Star Trek: Decipher was forced to close down their RPG studio due to financial difficulties, and announced supplements for their Star Trek RPG were never published. On November 12, 2007, Decipher CEO Warren Holland confirmed that the company would no longer be releasing any material concerning the Star Trek RPG.

The Star Trek mini-campaign represented a departure from the Buffet's usual approach to RPGs--instead of a new game once a month, we devoted several months to one game. In keeping with this theme of trying something different, this month's featured supper recipe is...breakfast! For a change of pace, we had breakfast for supper one night. Here's two dishes--one a classic Southern breakfast dish, another my personal favorite--that are sure to satisfy your guests:

GARLIC AND CHEESE GRITS

* 6 cups water
* 2 teaspoons salt
* 1 1/2 cups grits
* 1/2 cup butter
* 3 eggs, well beaten
* 16 ounces shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
* 2 to 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
* cayenne pepper to taste
Preparation:
Bring water and salt to a rolling boil; gradually stir in grits with fork. Cook, stirring constantly, until all water is absorbed. Stir in butter a tablespoon at a time; stir in the beaten eggs, working quickly so eggs will not cook before thoroughly blended into the grits, then stir in the shredded cheese, garlic and a little cayenne pepper. Put into a greased 2 1/2-quart casserole. Bake at 350° for 1 hour, until grits feel firm to touch in center (grits will still be soft). Let stand 10 minutes and serve.

Slowcooker Breakfast Cobbler
This recipe is from Table Talk by Mimi Wilson and Mary Beth Lagerborg, authors of Once A Month Cooking.

* 4 medium-sized apples, peeled and sliced
* 1/4 cup honey
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* 2 tablespoons butter, melted
* 2 cups granola cereal
Preparation:
Place apples in slow cooker and mix in remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low 7-9 hours (overnight) or on high 2-3 hours. Serve with milk. (Also goes great over hot biscuits or waffles!)
Yield: 4 servings

Technical Issues Delay AGC 82

My apologies for the further delay of Episode 82, but the home system (on which I'm trying to cobble together the file for AGC 82) is giving me fits. I was also unable to complete the episode over my vacation (editing together segments I had worked fine, but the cabin's acoustics made it impossible to record anything).

I expect to have things ironed out by Monday night, so look for the new episode then!

Update on Episode 82

I am going on vacation with my family this week, a week which would normally be a recording week. As I don't yet know what kind of (or how regular) internet access I shall have, we won't be recording an episode.

However... Thanks to Mags, I now have a backlog of RPG Buffet material, including their overview of favorite games and their six-month run of the Decipher Star Trek RPG. It might end up posting late, but I will definitely take the time this week to put it together (when I'm not busy writing Arcadian Gate and other stories, or, Ghu forbid, actually doing stuff with my family).

So look for AGC 82, The Return of the RPG Buffet, coming soon to a podcatcher near you!

A Notice To Those Concerned

A number of listeners received the original version of Episode 79 and have contacted me with concern.

There is nothing happening at the moment. The comment I made concerned the specific quotation during Episode 78 of a forum thread that, taken out of context, technically constitutes libel on my part, and was largely intended to take any blame on me alone, rather than my co-hosts. This, however, led people to assume some sort of action was taking place, which it is not at this time.

Given that commenting has gotten me in escalating levels of trouble as it is, I'm going to leave it at that.

Re-editing 79

I've become aware that I've once again put my foot in my mouth and said something on episode 79 that might imply things that aren't happening.

I've taken the post down, and I'm going back and re-editing the mp3s. Look for the repost later tonight.

Slight delay on 79

Everyone met up this past Tuesday, but we didn't get any recording done (Carol wanted to see how she got along with the new Chris before we did so). I'm going to have something sometime this week, but with a bunch of other projects (the fiction podcast launching, some other writing I need to do, and the real life job) my time is a little tight at the moment.

My plan is to record something Monday to have ready for release Monday night or Tuesday. I just picked up Demon Hunters as well as the Gumshoe version of the Book of Unremitting Horror, so I expect I'll discuss one of those.

There is also another BashCon Extra from Ben in the queue, so that will probably go out a little after.

Decision: A Vegas After Midnight Story (13:37)

(This is probably the only cross-post you will see from the new fiction podcast. I did it because it's the first story to go out over it, and it is gaming-based. If you like it, feel free to check things out over at mark-kinney.info and come along for the ride.)

Our first story is based on Mick Bradley's Vegas After Midnight game setting, and involves my character's deliberations, after his escape from death at the hands of an outlands warlord, about joining the Rangers.

AGC Game Tourney Statement

The statement text follows:

This is Mark Kinney of the All Games Considered podcast, and this is a statement concerning our recent episode in which we announced the winner of the AGC Game Tourney.

In the course of that episode, during the discussion of the general process of the tourney, I, in addressing some posting in Palladium Books' forums encouraging people to vote more than once per day, singled out a posting that, on second look, not only said they were not exploiting the system, but in fact simply referred to being able to vote once per day, which was legal in the first place. For that, I apologize to Palladium forum poster LostOne. I regret the error.

In addressing the posts that did encourage clearing cookies to vote more than once per day, I, in an attempt to balance out those claims, noted that Palladium has a large and active fan base. I should also have emphasized more those posts denouncing any forms of cheating in the tournament, and do so now. In any event, in a stance consistent with my editorial last August about the Fear The Boot/ENnie Awards situation, I will still seek options for the voting to prevent the question from being a factor in future iterations of the Tourney.

And finally, I deny claims that I wanted Rifts not to win the tournament. I encouraged organization among other game fans not to necessarily stop Rifts, but to drum up participation in general. I have in fact held up the Palladium example several times in the course of the tournament as what I want to see not just out of Palladium fans, but game fans in general, including the Palladium fans.

I cannot speak to the reactions of anyone else on the show, nor will I attempt to stifle those reactions. They had nothing to do with the running of the Tourney outside of assisting in the selection process.

Thank you.

AGCExtra 17 January 30 2008 (RPG Buffet plays Changeling: the Lost) (29:54)

The RPG Buffet talks about Changeling: The Lost, run by Carol.

Chicken Pot Pie is a classic in the comfort food genre. The basic recipe is amazingly versatile, with ultra-easy versions using frozen veggies and canned chicken, and gourmet versions with bechamel sauce or a Parmigiano-Reggiano crust. The RPG Buffet cheated a bit this month because Mags found a fantastic deal on frozen chicken pies from a local organic grocery, but here's her favorite easy Chicken Pot Pie recipe.

Serve it with mashed potatoes and a flavorful green vegetable, like green beans or steamed asparagus. Or, for a tasty variation, stew beef and golden mushroom soup can be substituted in this recipe, as well as turkey left over from the holidays.

INGREDIENTS:

* 2 frozen pie shells
* 1-10 3/4 oz cream of mushroom soup
* 1/2 C. milk
* 1 bag frozen mixed vegetables
* 2 C. cooked chopped chicken
* 1 tsp. minced garlic
* 1 small onion
* Coarse ground black pepper, to taste

PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Take pie shells out of freezer, separate, lay one pie shell flat, leaving the other in the pie pan, and thaw for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, defrost frozen veggies in microwave; chop and sautee onion.

Mix chicken, defrosted veggies, sauteed onion, garlic, soup and milk in large mixing bowl. Pour into pie shell; top with flattened pie shell. Pinch edges together and poke holes in top crust. Bake for about 30-40 minutes or until crusts are done.
