Hi Mags, hi all,
I was happy to hear so much enthusiasm about Lady Blackbird (and I've noticed John Harper appreciated it, too... I think he's blogged about it).
Maybe you already know this but I'll say it anyway: Lady Blackbird's mechanics are a really elegant "mix" of several indie/smallpress games. If you liked them so much and you'd like to see the "long term game" version of Lady Blackbird I'd suggest you to take a look at the Solar System. Keys, Secrets and other parts of LB are directly (more or less) taken from there.
Solar Wiki
The game is released under the Creative Commons, so you'll find the whole game text there (minus the short stories/examples you'd find directly on Eero Tuovinen's pdf/printed version of the rules.
Furthermore, take a look at Fate and Spirit of the Century, that's another "ancestor" of Lady Blackbird (Aspects)
Full Disclosure: I and my buddies publish Spirit of the Century in italy, and we host the Solar Wiki
Ciao from Italy,

Yep, LB is a direct descendant of The Shadow of Yesterday (aka the Solar System -- one of the best RPGs ever).
About long-term play: If you want slower advancement in LB, simply make the cost of an advance higher. 10 or 15 xp maybe. That way, players can still hit their keys as often (it's fun!) but they'll level up more slowly.
Nowhere in the PDF does it actually say that Kale is male... I mean, the Key of Fraternity would seem to be a indicate it.
