Regarding your discussion about the bookstore closing and the influence from ebooks and pdf's on the booksales. I think you forgot to take in account the way bigger threat to bookstores: Internetshops selling real books. My guess is that more and more people buy their books online for all kinds of different reasons. for example: you don't have to travel to the book store, to find that your book is out of stock (or worse yet, was never considered to be in stock), so you have to order the book, pay an advancement and come back on some other day. Online you look untill you find the book, buy it, give your creditcard numbers and some days later the book arrives at your frontdoor.
So I think that sites like amozon or bookdepository are way bigger threats to bookstores than things like ipad or kindle.
